The NLP techniques discussed here are aimed at helping
the reader to cope with the wider implications of Crohn’s disease and
The causes of Crohn’s disease are currently being sought, it is most commonly diagnosed in men and women aged between 15 and 25 and the cure is awaiting discovery.
Each patient carries his own doctor inside him
commonly the small intestine is affected although Crohn’s can manifest anywhere
from the mouth to the rectum.
It may occur in patches with healthy tissues in between but can also cause inflammation, deep ulcers and scarring to the wall of the intestines.
Sometimes it is associated with other inflammatory conditions affecting joints, skin and eyes.
The principal symptoms are pain, diarrhoea, severe tiredness and loss of weight.
A large number of patients are treated with steroidal and other drugs with the aim of reducing inflammation, and liquid food to rest the bowel.
Surgery is also commonly used to remove damage parts of the intestine.
primary questions for patients suffering with these debilitating diseases are
often, “How can I best carry on with my daily life, keep up my strength and
limit my pain?”
So search your mind for a time when you were successful at anything and consider how you did it step by step.
You will need to think deeply and discuss it with family or friends. Consider how you may transfer anything you did then to your present condition.
you are young and struggling to find a good example where you can transfer your
skills, you may just need to start afresh.
That will mean devising a strategy for coping with everyday life.
Start by planning what you feel you must do during the course of a day (for example, going to work) and what you would like to do (for recreation). Then consider what you can do.
may not feel much like planning a strategy at present, but if you do it will
ease your path. Do what you can to
control your own life.
It is all too easy to allow the disease to become part of your identity.
Be an inhospitable host and do your very best to lead a normal life notwithstanding!
the simple things. Make sure you plan to
drink enough during the course of the day and, because you lose so much
nourishment from the food you eat, be sure to top up with extra vitamins.
When you are planning to go shopping or just to enjoy a day out, find out in advance where the lavatories are. Just knowing in advance where to find one when you need it means that you will not get caught short and neither will you fret.
very aware of what you eat. You should
have been given a diet sheet by your treating medical practitioner. If not, ask for one.
You will normally be advised to eat only very small quantities of high residue foods in order to reduce the load on the intestines and minimise the processing and passing of waste material.
the inflammatory nature of the conditions, you may also wish to consider
undergoing tests to see if you are particularly sensitive to some foods.
If sensitivities show up, you might like to try limiting your intake of those foods to see if it lessens your symptoms.
For example – and I stress that this is just an example – some people have found they are sensitive to wheat and by avoiding or limiting their intake, their quality of life is better.
time to rest and relax whenever you can and quieten your mind. Stress isn’t good for any form of illness so
it is essential for you to take some time each day clearing your mind.
If you don’t have meditation music already, get some. Take yourself to a quiet spot and spend at least 15 to 30 minutes with it every day.
you are doing so it is a good time to practise some NLP and meditation
If your illness or any other problem is playing on you at a particular moment, you are inevitably making large pictures in your mind and replaying them.
The more you worry about anything, the more you are making big pictures and dwelling on them.
concentrate on the unwanted picture, see the colour, look at the detail and
then mentally push the picture away from you until it gets smaller and smaller
and, as you do so, drain the colour from it until you can no longer see the

call the picture back and try to bring up the detail. It should be harder to do on the second
Repeat the exercise exactly and again try to call up the picture. Do the exercise at least five times until you cannot call up the picture at all.
Another powerful exercise to give you a feeling of health and well-being involves visualisation.
You can do this with or without meditation music in the background, but I find that the music is an added bonus.
you are going to do is visualise attracting light into your body.
So sit comfortably, relax, take a deep breath, close your eyes and see in your mind’s eye light flowing from without to all parts of your body.
Now imagine it pouring into your spine and radiating throughout your body. See and feel every cell in your body filled with light and glowing bright.
light is now so strong within you that it is shining out beyond your body so
strongly that it fills the room and, as it does so, it wraps your body still
further within its glow. You can imagine
also sharing your light with others.
So if you are in a group situation or you feel someone else needs your light, imagine your light flowing out into them and, the more you do so, the more your own light is replaced and strengthened.
the conclusion of an exercise like this when you are feeling really good or at
other times when you are enjoying happy and memorable experiences, anchor the
feeling by squeezing together your thumb and forefinger on your right
hand. Squeeze them together just at the
point the happy feeling peaks.
Later, if you are feeling down or in pain, fire off the anchor by squeezing them together again and revive the good feeling.
There is no limit to the different good experiences you can stack as anchors by using that technique, so do it at every opportunity.
It is a technique I use frequently, and in the moments following the pressing together of my thumb and forefinger a host of wonderful memories and feelings flood my mind.
